Ayahuasca? Nope. Ashwagandha

I have had several questions these last few days about Ashwagandha and whether it is the same hyped up herb "that one football player took". The simple answer is no. But I thought I would share some basic knowledge on the difference between the two.

Ayahuasca (the plant mixture the football player is referencing) is a combination of two different plant species, Psychotria viridis and Banisteriopsis caapi. These plants are harvested and then cooked in a special way that is mostly only known to Shamanic tribes of the Amazon. It is used as a religous tool to commune with nature to see how they can be of service to the Earth. It is also used ceremoniously in healing rituals, spiritual quests, and many other religous rites. This is a sacred practice that has been held by communities and tribes for thousands of years. It has gained popularity in western culture due mainly to is psychotropic abilities.

Ashwagandha is an herb native to Asia and Africa and is used primarily in Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a form of herbal medicine practiced in India. Many Western herbalists are also now utilizing this herb for its healing properties. It is classified as an adaptogen, which means that it has the ability to bring the body back to balance. It regulates stress hormones and helps the body rest so that it can heal. It is not a psychotropic herb, but can be very calming, especially if taken with warm milk and honey!

With love, Lindsey
